چکیده

“A child’s hands” was chosen as the cover image for a monograph by photographer Aenne Biermann (1898–1933), published in Weimar Germany (1930) part of small series paperback publications edited Franz Roh and Jan Tschichold. Volume 1 same series, also 1930, dedicated to photography László Moholy-Nagy, who different context had advocated photographic literacy. Even though amongst forerunners New Vision, evidenced her photobook 60 Photos, she been forgotten long time. By calling attention oeuvre, my essay poses questions about mechanisms writing history (and which books are omitted from it). In discourse surrounding photobook, hand depicted on is viewed symbol activity that unleashes, both tangible object thinking device. Biermann’s photo-constellations oscillate between training manual atlas seeing, perception primer picture book; they offer surprisingly humorous complexity, taking full advantage medium artistic expression.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS; also called motor neuron disease) is a devastating medical condition that progressively robs patients of their ability to move, speak and eventually breathe. At present, many physicians are hesitant to propose tracheostomy and respiratory support in the terminal phase of ALS. Don't judge a book by its cover: don't judge stenosis severity solely by intravascular ultrasound.

In this issue of Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions, Kang et al1 compare intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) parameters against a gold standard of fractional flow reserve (FFR) for evaluating intermediate stenoses. Their work adds another piece of evidence to a debate whose outcome is fundamentally changing interventional cardiology. As encapsulated by the title of the “FFR versus Angiograph...

You can't judge a book by its cover or a tumor by its expression profile

Expression profiling has shown great promise in matching cancers of unknown primary to likely primary tumors of origin based on patterns of mRNA expression. However, it remains uncertain as to whether even well matched tumors will demonstrate the clinical features, such as rate of progression, of their matched counterparts. In this case report, we note that based on histology, immunohistochemis...

You can judge a book by its cover Evidence that cheaters may look different from cooperators

Cosmides and Tooby argue that humans possess a domain-specific cheater detection module, which allows them to keep track of who has honored and who has violated social contracts. Consistent with this logic, others demonstrate that humans better recognize faces of known cheaters than those of known cooperators. We show, in Experiments 1–3, that humans better recognize faces of cheaters than thos...

Judge a Book by its Cover: Conservative Focused Crawling under Resource Constraints

In this paper, we propose a domain specific crawler that decides the domain relevance of a URL without downloading the page. In contrast, a focused crawler relies on the content of the page to make the same decision. To achieve this, we use a classifier model which harnesses features such as the page’s URL and its parents’ information to score a page. The classifier model is incrementally train...
